Carroll, Loney pace Dodgers' offense

at Tucson, Ariz.
Tuesday, March 30

Rockies at the plate: Todd Helton smacked his first homer of the spring, a two-run shot in the first inning. Dexter Fowler tripled and scored in the third.

Dodgers at the plate: Jamey Carroll and James Loney had three hits apiece.

Rockies on the mound: Left-hander Greg Smith, a candidate for the final bullpen spot, struck out four in four scoreless innings, and gave up two hits. Lefty Randy Flores gave up singles to the first two batters but forced a double play and exited the inning scoreless. Bullpen candidate Juan Rincon struck out two in his inning.

Dodgers on the mound: Right-hander Josh Lindblom, the Jim and Dearie Mulvey Award for top rookie in camp, gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings.

Cactus League records: Dodgers 11-11, Rockies 14-12-2.

Worth noting: Smith finished Cactus League play with a 1.50 ERA in five outings.

Up next: The Rockies will break camp at Hi Corbett and not return. The team moves to a new complex in the Scottsdale, Ariz., area next season. Opening Day starter Ubaldo Jimenez will start for the Rockies against the D-backs, who also are leaving Tucson and will share the new complex with the Rockies. Right-hander Tim Redding, who has struggled this spring, will continue his fight for the final spot in the bullpen. After Wednesday, the Rockies are scheduled for two games with the Mariners at Albuquerque, N.M.

The Dodgers break camp Wednesday with split-squad games in two states. In the afternoon, they play the final game of the spring at Camelback Ranch-Glendale against the Giants, with Opening Day starter Vicente Padilla pitching for the Dodgers, followed by fifth-starter candidate Russ Ortiz. While that game is ongoing, another squad of Dodgers will fly to Las Vegas, where it will play the Cincinnati Reds in a 7:05 p.m. PT start. Pitching in that game will be four pitchers fighting for jobs -- Josh Towers, Carlos Monasterios, Ramon Ortiz and Justin Miller. Manager Joe Torre will accompany the squad to Las Vegas.
