PHOENIX -- Rule 5 Draft pick Jamie Hoffmann was returned Monday by the Yankees to the Dodgers, who also released infielder Angel Berroa.
Hoffmann, a 25-year-old right-handed hitter, had a 14-game callup to the Dodgers last year after starting the season at Double-A Chattanooga. He was the first overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft by the Nationals for a fee of $50,000 and was immediately traded to the Yankees. He was offered back by the Yankees to the Dodgers, who paid $25,000 to reacquire him. Hoffmann figures to play for Triple-A Albuquerque.
Berroa, a non-roster player, was released so he could hook on with another club before the season starts, said manager Joe Torre. The Dodgers are satisfied that Chin-lung Hu can handle shortstop for an extended time, if needed.
