LOS ANGELES -- Just two batters into Tuesday night's game against the Angels, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly lost a challenge of a safe call at first base.

In the first regular-season matchup of two of the game's best young players, Angels center fielder Mike Trout grounded a ball toward third base against Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Third baseman Juan Uribe dove and made a throw to first, but Trout was ruled safe.

Mattingly challenged, but after a review, the play would stand as called.

Kershaw started an inning-ending double play when the next batter, Albert Pujols, hit a sharp ground back to the mound, with second baseman Dee Gordon making a nice recovery on a bobbled catch to get Trout at second before throwing to first to get Pujols.

The Dodgers are now 14-12 in challenges on the year.
