Ethier, Hanley held out of starting lineup

LOS ANGELES -- Center fielder Andre Ethier sat out of Friday night's game against the Cardinals -- a precautionary move, manager Don Mattingly said.

"He's been having some bumps and bruises and kind of little stuff here, little stuff there, and for me, it's been growing a little bit, and I'm just trying to cut that off at the pass," Mattingly said.

"I know he's not going to be 100 percent after one day but just keep him from going over the top."

Ethier's right knee has bothered him since the team's road trip to Kansas City. It was swollen Friday, a day after he fouled an Adam Wainwright pitch off of the leg. Scott Van Slyke started in center in place of Ethier.

Meanwhile, shortstop Hanley Ramirez was out of the lineup for the fourth straight game with an arthritic right shoulder. He's day to day after an MRI on Thursday revealed no structural damage.

Ramirez took ground balls on the Dodger Stadium field Friday, but he didn't make any throws to first base.

"Hanley's up stretching with the boys here," Mattingly said. "And he's going to try hit inside, maybe try to throw inside, and pretty much everything he does other than stretch is going to be inside. I'm hoping to have him available in some respect."

Mattingly said he didn't anticipate Ramirez would need to go on the disabled list.
