KANSAS CITY -- Dee Gordon doesn't have the name recognition of runaway ballot leader Chase Utley of Philadelphia, or the power numbers of runner-up Neil Walker of Pittsburgh.

But if the National League wants to win the All-Star Game, it will find a spot for the speedy Gordon, whose national media requests are an indication that his exciting style of play is being noticed. Gordon was third in the most recent balloting at second base.

Utley has made five All-Star teams, but none since 2010. The NL has had five different starters at the position the last five years. Brandon Phillips started at second base in 2013, Dan Uggla in 2012, Rickie Weeks in 2011 and Martin Prado in 2010, when Utley was the backup. The last time Utley started an All-Star Game was 2009.

Gordon has never been on the ballot before and wasn't considered a second baseman until the start of Spring Training and wasn't considered the likely starting second baseman for the club until the exhibition season was nearly over.

Despite all of that, he leads MLB with 39 stolen bases, leads the NL with eight triples and leads the team with 42 runs scored.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com -- online or on a mobile device -- using the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot Sponsored by Experian until Thursday, July 3, at 8:59 p.m. PT. The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15 on FOX.
