Dodgers exploring deal for Reds' Harang

|
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have talked to the Reds about trading for pitcher Aaron Harang, one of several veterans being considered to fill their vacant fourth starter spot.

Talks are said to be in the early stages, according to baseball sources.

Harang fits the profile of what general manager Ned Colletti is looking for -- an available innings eater whose recent performance doesn't match his huge salary, which his current club would love to dump.

However, the Reds would have to eat much of it, as the Dodgers have financial limitations and Harang is guaranteed at least $15 million over the next year if he's traded: $12.5 million in 2010 with a '11 option of $12.75 million and a $2 million buyout that climbs to $14 million/$2.5 million buyout if he's traded.

Harang landed a $36.5 million deal off back-to-back 16-win seasons in 2006-07 but has regressed since, going 12-31 the past two years with ERAs of 4.78 and 4.21. His '09 season was cut short by an appendectomy.

Harang isn't the only option. On the free-agent market, two pitchers the Dodgers acquired during the 2009 season -- Vicente Padilla and Jon Garland -- would also qualify, but both are looking for multi-year deals, which the club is determined to avoid.
