Uribe wins Dodgers' defensive award

|

LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Juan Uribe was named the Dodgers' Wilson Defensive Player of the Year, which was announced Thursday night on MLB Network.

The award winner was determined by the detailed statistical analysis of MLB Network's "shredder system" used by Clubhouse Confidential, plus input from MLB Network analysts.

Uribe was named winner of the award despite opening the season as the backup to Luis Cruz, a remarkable comeback after two disappointing seasons since signing a $21 million, three-year contract. Uribe committed only five errors in 900 1/3 innings for a .983 fielding percentage, second-best mark among National League third basemen.

The Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards are part of a series of postseason honors that includes the GIBBY Awards, which feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

The GIBBY trophy for Defensive Player of the Year will be awarded as part of the 2013 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards, which are based on voting by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research, as well as fan balloting on MLB.com.

Through Sunday, Dec. 1, fans will be able to cast their ballots at MLB.com for the year's top defensive star, with no individual league affiliation.
