Furcal takes a tour of local fire station

|
LOS ANGELES -- When shortstop Rafael Furcal first agreed to visit Dodger Stadium's local fire station, No. 20, he probably thought the event would be pretty low key.

A simple tour of the fire station, a trip down the fire pole and a chance to try on the standard firefighter uniform.

What Furcal probably didn't expect to experience was a frantic ride in a fire engine to a bona fide fire across town.

But that's exactly what happened halfway through Furcal's tour on Wednesday afternoon, and a wide-eyed Furcal hopped in the engine along with the rest of Station No. 20.

"It's a little tough," Furcal said of his trip in the fire engine. "In that long truck you feel like a snake; it's moving around and then everybody gets out of the way. It's the first time I've seen that happen."

Furcal's visit preceded Firefighter Appreciation Night at Dodger Stadium during the second game of a three-game Interleague series against the Athletics. Firefighters from local stations will be honored on the field for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Canter's Deli provided lunch for the entire station.

Captain Jamie Moore led Furcal's tour of the station. Moore showed off the station's two engines and one truck and answered all of Furcal's questions about life as a firefighter.

He even let Furcal test out the power of the water hose outside the building.

For Furcal the trip had added meaning. For the past two years, Furcal has tried to get a fire truck for his hometown of Loma de Cabrera in the Dominican Republic.

"That's one part of my big things, get a nice fire truck for my hometown because we don't have any in my hometown," Furcal said.

And though Cpt. Moore might be able to help Furcal in the process of acquiring a truck, that wasn't the only reason Furcal made the trip to the fire station.

"I'm always supportive of those guys," Furcal said. "Because I'm supportive of those guys in the Dominican Republic, and then I want to know how this works over here."
