Dodgers' Schmidt hit by line drive at Triple-A

LOS ANGELES -- Injured Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt was hit on the side of the head by a line drive in his Saturday night rehab assignment for Triple-A Albuquerque, but he was not believed to be seriously injured.

According to reports from Albuquerque, Schmidt was evaluated at the ballpark and not hospitalized.

He was struck on the side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Salt Lake City's Freddy Sandoval and went down on the mound, but he got up quickly and walked off under his own power. The ball caromed to second base.

The injury occurred with two outs in the third inning and only 27 pitches into his start, with Schmidt having allowed a two-run homer, one of five hits.

Schmidt is on the comeback trail after two shoulder operations. He has not pitched in a Major League game since June 2007.
