LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have signed infielder Josh Fields to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.
Fields, 29, is a third baseman who has played for the White Sox and Royals and before that was a two-sport star at Oklahoma State, leading the football team to two bowl games.
Last year he played in the Minor Leagues for Colorado, Seattle and Boston and with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. In 2007, he hit 23 homers for the White Sox and finished seventh in American League Rookie of the Year balloting.
