Abreu was disabled retroactively to Wednesday, the day after he last played. Garciaparra, LaRoche and pitcher Jason Schmidt were disabled retroactively to March 20, and would be eligible to play as early as Saturday in San Diego. However, Garciaparra still has not begun swinging a bat because of a broken hand, and LaRoche will be out another month after surgery for a torn thumb ligament.
Schmidt, who suffered a setback in Spring Training, is said to be making steady progress, and the Dodgers must believe that, otherwise they could have opened a roster spot by placing him on the 60-day emergency list instead of the 15-day list.
That means management believes there's a decent chance Schmidt could be pitching in games before June following major shoulder surgery last June.
Here's the 25-man Opening Day roster:
Pitchers -- Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda, Esteban Loaiza, Takashi Saito, Jonathan Broxton, Joe Beimel, Scott Proctor, Hong-Chih Kuo and Ramon Troncoso.
Catchers -- Russell Martin, Gary Bennett.
Infielders -- James Loney, Jeff Kent, Rafael Furcal, DeWitt, Chin-lung Hu, Mark Sweeney, Chavez.
Outfielders -- Matt Kemp, Andruw Jones, Andre Ethier, Juan Pierre, Delwyn Young.
