LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers pitcher Carlos Monasterios underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction this month and will be sidelined about a year.

Monasterios, a 25-year-old right-hander, last year became only the second Rule 5 Draft pick to stick with the Dodgers for an entire season. He went 3-5 with a 4.38 ERA, enjoying his most success as a reliever despite making 13 starts.

Monasterios made five Spring Training appearances, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA before being optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, where he started one game before being on the disabled list April 9, with right elbow inflammation and spent three months rehabbing before the decision was made to operate.
